Week 10 Blog Topic: Class Highlights

  1. Bibliophile: I am actually this type of person who love to collect books and a lover of books particularly for qualities of format.
  2. The Titanic’s disaster: the radio operators of other ships had turned off the equipment for the night, so the Titanic distress calls could not contact the other ships. The disaster could have prevented if the radio had not been turned off. The radio Act of 1912 required all ships leave their radios on all day 24 hours no matter what happens.
  3. The First Amendment says that congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
  4. "Journalism is a guardian that never sleeps and protects freedom of the people" - Winston Churchill". The importance of journalism comes from the people's right to opinion and expression.
  5. List of most commonly challenged books in the United States: to Kill a Mocking Bird, the Great Gatsby, The Catcher in the Rye, The Jungle etc. I have read all these banned and challenged books. They are banned because of certain social, sexual or ethical issues.

Week 9: Google Gets Around 250,000 Calls Weekly to Take Down Copyright Infringement Links

Online service provider, Google, now regularly receives more takedown requests in a week comparing to the entire year of 2009, in which is around 1.2 billion requests weekly.

Google is not legally responsible for users’ copyright infringement behavior given that they are unaware of it, under US copyright laws set out in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Although they are responsible once they have been informed about the violation. Also, they must remove the access to the content with the takedown request.
Publishing the copyright takedown request allows stakeholders to know how the removal of requests from both the government and private parties affect the result in search. Policymakers and internet users around the world ponder the pros and cons to the issue of online copyright infringement.

HOW DO MARKETERS TARGET YOU?

What type are you? Thinker? Achiever? Maker? Take the VALS Survey, and then compare the result to the brands you buy and how you think about yourself. Does the result seem valid to you? If so, can you think of any examples of techniques marketers use to reach your "type" specifically? Write about it as an alternative blog topic.

I am a primary achiever and partial experiencer type of person. But, I remain more likely to be an experiencer type of person. I am a young, enthusiastic, and impulsive consumer and can quickly become enthusiastic about new trend of fashions. I also like to seek variety and excitement everyday.

Furthermore, I am totally an experiencer since I spend a comparatively high proportion of my income on fashion, entertainment, and socializing.  My purchases reflect my emphasis on “cool” and looking good products. For example, I would like to buy Victoria’s secret lingerie rather than any other normal brands. Also, I would only like UGG boots and BMW Minicooper vehicles. I believe that marketers can target me by using “plain folks pitch” and “snob appeal” techniques to approach me with their appealing advertisements.

BLOG 7 topic (Internet):

I have used the Internet for shopping especially. I know some of my friends used lots of time to play online game like League of Legends (LOL). They used most of the day to play game with their friends on the Internet.  It totally affects their learning progress and social ability, because they don’t really like going to class or studying when they got addicted into the game.

Most online games include copious amounts of chats, allowing players to interact with each other in the appearance of the characters they represent. Such games also appeal players with complex systems of goals and achievements. "League of Legends" players engage in activities to develop their characters from one level to the next and compete to find valuable in-game elements such as armor and weapons and battle with their legends.

Many video game addicts are lonely and have never felt like they belonged. They get a sense of belonging in the game. In some cases, the game provides the only friends they interact with.

How to Stop a Video Game Addiction
  • Identify an addiction V.S. healthy game play
  • Do not play more than 5 hours a day
  • Forcibly limit your amount of time per day, i.e. have someone monitor and limit your game play
  • Remove all games from your house
  • Find a social outlet to replace gaming activities

My Favorite Movies

My favorite movie in 2012-2013: Inception

Dom Cobb, the main actor of the movie, whom obligates business spying by penetrating the subconscious of his targets. He is given a chance to regain his old life as an exchange for an inception test: the implanting of another person's idea into the other’s unconscious mind.  I like the ending of the movie. It is left wonderfully ambiguous. Did Cobb stay down in the dreams or go back home? I am certain that Cobb had chosen to remain in his dream with his wife and kids, instead of in the reality with his kids alone.

My all-time favorite movie: The Toy Story

It’s a winning animated film that has childhood memory for everyone. I love the Toy Story very much. It introduced not one but two unforgettable characters: cowboy rag-doll Woody and plastic space guard Buzz Lightyear. It begins with a story of a cowboy doll which feels threatened and envious when a new spaceman character replaces him in a boy's room.
