Online
service provider, Google, now regularly receives more takedown requests in a
week comparing to the entire year of 2009, in which is around 1.2 billion
requests weekly.
Google
is not legally responsible for users’ copyright infringement behavior given
that they are unaware of it, under US copyright laws set out in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Although they
are responsible once they have been informed about the violation. Also, they
must remove the access to the content with the takedown request.
Publishing
the copyright takedown request allows stakeholders to know how the removal of
requests from both the government and private parties affect the result in
search. Policymakers and internet users around the world ponder the pros and
cons to the issue of online copyright infringement.
